Every year, the Met Gala brings together stars, creatives, and style industry bigwigs for a night of glamour reaping rewards the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. And once a year, the ones people without invitations pore over footage from the red carpet. But what do they actually do at the Met Gala?
That's a pertinent question ahead of the 2024 version of the event. This 12 months’s theme is “The Garden of Time” — named after a 1962 short tale of that identify by way of J.G. Ballard — and the gala kicks off the museum’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” — a show of loads of garments and accessories from throughout 4 centuries.
OK, so let’s pretend we’ve been invited to the Met Gala and can afford a price ticket, the price of which hit $75,000 this 12 months. What happens after the pink carpet?
What do they actually do at the Met Gala?
What happens inside the Met Gala is secret, and guests “will have to abide by way of the no-phone (and, due to this fact, no social media) coverage,” Vogue studies. But the magazine did have a pair of photographers roving the 2023 Met Gala and taking snapshots, so you'll see some pics from inside that year’s event.
As for the evening’s actions, visitors at a Met Gala discover that 12 months’s Costume Institute exhibition, take a seat down for dinner, and watch a high-profile efficiency. Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Cher have carried out at past Met Galas, in keeping with CBS News.
Photos from the 2023 gala display Lizzo rocking a glittering bodysuit and thigh-high boots as she stood on a table for her efficiency. She sang “Good as Hell” and “Truth Hurts.” Lizzo and Irish flautist Sir James Galway teamed up for a flute rendition of “Flight of the Bumblebee” for that 12 months’s event, in keeping with Business Insider.
But beyond the fashion, the food, and the festivities, the actual draw for many visitors is the probability to rub elbows with the ultra-famous. “It’s amusing for assembly the five people you’ve all the time sought after to meet for your existence,” Marcus Wainwright, co-founder of Rag & Bone, advised The New York Times in 2016. “It will give you some type of permission as a result of you were given in the front door.”
You can get a way of the Met Gala from ‘Ocean’s 8.’
For the climactic heist in the 2018 movie Ocean’s 8, director Gary Ross and his crew recreated the Met Gala, with some scenes filmed on a soundstage and a few filmed at the museum itself.
It was once all done “very much in conjunction with Vogue and the Met,” as Gary informed Slate. “I spotted early on that this needed to be a collaboration, as a result of they’re more or less giving us something they’ve created and letting the international in spite of everything glimpse the within.”
The filmmaker added, “It had to be unique and one thing they may just feel happy with. We had a lot of meetings with Vogue. [Editor-in-chief] Anna [Wintour] signed off on what we have been doing and used to be incredibly gracious. Eaddy Kiernan, who plays Anna’s assistant in the film, is actually the person who plans the real Met ball.”
So yeah, Ocean’s 8 might be the closest any of us come to the actual deal. And it doesn’t cost $75,000 to get right of entry to!
