Will and Lyra go back to Cittàgazze, where Will loses two palms but manages to procure the Subtle Knife. The object, as it turns out, allows the Bearer to open and close doorways between worlds.

Sadly, the duo is faced by way of Boreal and Mrs. Coulter, but they manage to escape with Lyra's alethiometer and the knife. They also be informed that Will's father is alive.
