Lyra's alethiometer tells her to hunt a Scholar, so she returns to Will's reality with him to meet physicist Dr. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby).

(*2*)Dr. Malone uses a computer instrument to reveal that Angels are Dust and rise up angels have spent years working in opposition to a monotheistic God referred to as The Authority. Dust is helping human creativity and discovery, which The Authority does no longer want. The organization known as Magisterium, led via Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), Lyra's mom, wants humans to remain subservient on The Authority's orders.

Meanwhile, Lord Boreal steals Lyra's alethiometer, and says he will exchange it for the Subtle Knife as long as Will fetches it. Will and Lyra go back to Cittàgazze, where Will loses two palms but manages to procure the Subtle Knife. The object, as it turns out, allows the Bearer to open and close doorways between worlds.

Sadly, the duo is faced by way of Boreal and Mrs. Coulter, but they manage to escape with Lyra's alethiometer and the knife. They also be informed that Will's father is alive.
