Chip and Dale Arent Brothers in the New Rescue Rangers Film, and Fans Are Freaking
Are Chip and Dale brothers? Many fans assumed so, but the film ‘Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers’ establishes a different beginning story for the chipmunks.
If you’re wondering if Chip and Dale are brothers, congratulations. You’ve stumbled upon considered one of Disney’s maximum enduring mysteries. And the new film Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, which started streaming on Disney+ on Friday, May 20, does little to transparent up the chipmunk confusion.
Fans have been wondering about Chip and Dale’s dating for years now. “Are Chip and Dale brothers?” one fan wrote on Reddit in 2016. “This has been bugging me for many years.”

On that aforementioned Reddit thread, one commenter seen that the nature of Chip and Dale’s courting has “never in reality been mentioned. “
“A lot of other people view them as brothers, including the guy who drew them,” that Reddit consumer added. “But it sort of feels like simplest Walt [Disney] knew whether they had been brothers or now not, so it’s simply kind of out there.”
That commenter is apparently relating to Bill Justice, the animator who first drew Chip and Dale. Justice wrote in his autobiography the two characters are “simply little brothers,” but Disney hasn't ever said that familial relationship, in keeping with the 2012 e book Disney Trivia from the Vault by Dave Smith.
But the new movie depicts them as adolescence friends.
In Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, written by means of How I Met Your Mother scribes Dan Gregor and Doug Mand and directed by way of Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island repute, the two chipmunks are introduced as pals from elementary faculty, as The A.V. Club notes in its evaluation.
And then the movie fast-forwards to when Chip (voiced by means of John Mulaney) and Dale (voiced by means of Andy Samberg) are adults “residing among cartoons and people in modern-day Los Angeles,” as Disney says in a synopsis.
“It has been decades since their a success tv series used to be cancelled, and Chip has succumbed to a lifetime of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale, in the meantime, has had CGI surgical treatment and works the nostalgia convention circuit, determined to relive his glory days,” the synopsis adds. “When a former solid mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale should repair their damaged friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas as soon as once more to save lots of their pal’s life.”
Fans — and even critics — are confused.
If Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers film established Chip and Dale as pals and no longer kinfolk, a minimum of one movie critic missed the memo. The Hollywood Reporter’s evaluate of the film refers to the duo as brothers. (The Austin Chronicle, in the meantime, observes that the movie “[throws] out the first forty five years of their animated history right through which they were explicitly brothers.”)
And fans are puzzled, too. “Alright, query: Are Chip and Dale no longer brothers?” one tweeted recently. “Why are they assembly for the first time in third grade?”
Another Twitter user wrote, “I’m sorry, are Chip and Dale not brothers?! I HAVE BEEN LIED TO MY ENTIRE LIFE.”
A 3rd Twitter consumer found the silver lining in the switch-up, writing, “I used to think Chip and Dale had been brothers, however I’m glad to find out they’re now not. Now I will take into accounts them kissing, and it gained’t be weird.”
